Responding to 'The Da Vinci Code'

Christians and Non-Believers Alike Are Asking, "What Is the Real Truth?"
by Alex McFarland

With approximately 40 million copies of Dan Brown's book in circulation — and a major motion picture version soon to be released — Focus on the Family has launched a response to The Da Vinci Code. The book has become a significant cultural phenomenon, and the movie will only cause this to escalate. Plot twists within Da Vinci revolve around amazing revelations and surprising historical discoveries — ultimately exposing the long-hidden, allegedly fraudulent nature of Christianity.

Scholars and religious leaders from many backgrounds have expressed concern over assertions made in The Da Vinci Code. The book's questionable content is especially troubling, since page one promises that, "All descriptions of artwork, architecture, documents, and secret rituals in this novel are accurate."

Brown's book blurs reality by framing its fictional vignettes with countless historical allusions and impressive sounding jargon. Focus on the Family has discovered that Da Vinci has caused many to doubt their faith and to have serious questions about vital truths of Christianity — especially young people. As a Christian ministry committed to the spiritual welfare of all ages, Focus on the Family has created this Web site.

Within this site, you will find articles and resources created by historians, journalists and theologians — all experts in their fields. The contributors featured on this site have provided content to Focus on the Family out of a shared vision to present the facts about Christianity. Some items deal directly with The Da Vinci Code book/movie, and other resources touch on related topics (such as Christian apologetics, the biblical worldview, or how to pass the faith on to one's children).

Focus on the Family believes there are core spiritual truths worth defending, vitally important to both Protestants and Catholics, including:

  • The identity of Jesus
  • His mission and purpose
  • The origin, content and trustworthiness of the Bible
  • The origin of the church
  • The message and teachings of the earliest Christians
  • The motives of early church leaders
  • The relevancy of Christianity today

The content on this site has been researched and compiled not only to dispel the misinformation of The Da Vinci Code, but also to demonstrate that Christianity rests on a solid foundation. Indeed, the biblical message of Jesus Christ is true.

To encourage further study by individuals and groups, Focus on the Family offers a number of excellent apologetics resources addressing this and other subjects. The Da Vinci movie trailer closes with the words, "Seek The Truth."  That is precisely what Focus on the Family encourages people everywhere to do! Thank you — and bless you — for caring enough to check out these resources. May the True and Living God establish you in truth.
